Who
Working Landscapes is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to build more sustainable livelihoods in the Warren County, NC region through stewardship of our natural and cultural assets. We are based in Warren County.
What
Working Landscapes works to help develop our region’s local and regional food system. We operate a food hub where we aggregate, chop, and bag local and regional produce and then sell the finished products to institutional buyers such as schools, hospitals, and universities. We also offer our What’s Growing On programming to schools in schools across our region in order to help educate kids about the importance of local, nutritious, and seasonal produce. The Main Street Kitchen in downtown Warrenton is home to a shared-use commercial kitchen where food entrepreneurs can make products for sale in stores or at farmers’ markets, or residents can host parties and events.
When
Working Landscapes was founded by a Warren County native, Carla Norwood in 2011. Our programs have grown out of a community-based assessment–called Growing Local, Buying Local–which informed our focus on food and agriculture as means to help create sustainable jobs and to maintain healthy ecosystems.
Where
Working Landscapes in based in Warrenton, NC at 108C S Main Street, on the second floor of a recently renovated historic building in the center of town.
Why
We work to support local farms, small businesses, and their workers by helping to develop supply chains that allow workers to be paid fair wages, local products to be sustainably produced, and to raise awareness in schools and in the community about the importance of vibrant local and regional food system connections. We do this work because we want to see Warren County and the entire region become better off economically, culturally, and environmentally in the future.
