The mission of Avery Senior Services is to promote the well-being of Avery County’s older adults by supporting services and activities which are intended to support their health and independence, enhance their dignity and encourage their involvement in and with the community.
Programs and Services:
- Congregate Nutrition
- Lunch is served Monday Through Friday at 11:45am
- Home Delivered Meals
- A hot, nutritious, noontime meal is served Monday through Friday. Volunteers deliver meals on six routes.
- Information & Referral
- Their office maintains information and data on current aging issues. They assist older adults and their families in acquiring needed information whether directly or by referring them to the correct agency source.
- Senior Center Activities Available to anyone 60 years of age or older:

- Efforts are ongoing to keep the community informed of services available and to contact those most in need.
- Transportation
- Available on a daily basis throughout Avery County and other locations in order to transport clients to the Senior Center and to provide access to essential services such as doctors, clinics, grocery and pharmacy.
- In-Home Aide Service
- Many Times known as Chore Services, In-Home Aide is available on two levels:
- Level I Service offers basic home maintenance by maintaining a clean, healthy living environment and assisting with shopping, cooking, correspondence, etc.
- Level 2 Service provides basic personal care services such as bathing.
- Respite Care
- Available to provide relief to those caring for the elderly with long term care needs. An aide visits the home to provide help for primary caregivers by giving family members a few hours to run errands, to meet appointments, or to just relax.
- Caregiver’s Haven
- A specialized adult day program of the Avery Senior Center for persons with memory loss from Alzheimer’s Disease or a related disorder. Caregiver’s Haven is a small-group program in a comfortable, homelike setting where participants enjoy friendship and meaningful activities. Caregivers get time out for personal needs, etc. The program is therapeutic for participants and helps families keep their loved ones at home.
- Volunteer Avery County
- A branch of Avery Senior Services, Volunteer Avery County recruits and places volunteers with many agencies in Avery County which are youth, aging, or community oriented. VAC also specializes in obtaining resources for hard to meet needs.
