Three Tips for Beginners to Get Your Congregation Healthier

August 14, 2015 · by Joy Williams, Former PHW Regional Coordinator

I love being in the North Carolina country. There is nothing better than riding with your windows down, smelling the fresh air (sometimes loaded with smells of farm animals), the wind blowing your lips into a smile, and just looking at open land. I love it!

Small towns like Star, Pendleton, or Pembroke are just filled with “Aunt Beas”. I have had wonderful dining opportunities to taste delicious “one pot wonders,” as my friend told me once of my aunt’s cooking, where the whole four-course meal can fit into a casserole dish. Only heaven could have given this idea to an individual to create.

During the church potlucks I have visited, I have learned three quick tips that churches can use to help make their congregations healthier. We talk about these three steps within our Bronze certification, so check that description out after reading this post.

These three beginner tips center on the main dish, beverages, and dessert sections of a potluck-style meal. If your congregation is able to do these tips, then you are helping to give the option of health to all who come to your table. Let’s partner together to help our family, friends, and ourselves make healthy choices at the next potluck.

  1. Add a salad to the main dish menu. Adding a salad will help bring color to the plate and provide a way for many individuals to get their green leafy vegetables.
  2. Add water as an option for a beverage. There is nothing more refreshing than water. And at times, some people just need a slice of lemon to take plain water into the realm of royalty.
  3. Add fresh fruit to the dessert menu. I especially like peaches and mint during the summer months. Fruit can be God’s sugar for those of us who want to avoid refined sugar.

If you have other ideas, please share them. I can’t wait to transform how we support people’s health, one potluck at a time.
