Efforts to Cut Health Care Continue in Congress

April 24, 2017 · by Aleta Payne, Former Deputy Executive Director

The public is opposed to efforts to replace the Affordable Care Act, but some members of the U.S. House of Representatives seem determined to forge ahead anyway.

The latest version of a replacement plan for the ACA could be voted on as early as this Wednesday. As with the American Health Care Act, this would leave fewer people with insurance and stands to strip away many of the ACA’s most crucial provisions, such as requiring the coverage of essential benefits including prescription drugs, mental health services, and maternity care.

Constituent voices stopped the AHCA from ever making it to a vote, and they are needed, again, to prevent this new iteration from moving forward. Please call your Representative in Congress to let them know of your opposition. Share your personal stories of loved ones who would be impacted, your opposition as a person of faith who believes we are called to compassion and care for the vulnerable, and your expectation that the richest country in the world would do better, not worse, by its citizens on something as fundamental as health care. Congress should be working to improve and extend the ACA, not replace it with something that will do significant harm.

The determination by some House leaders to move forward on this is disappointing. Those who actually met with constituents during their recently completed recess heard plenty of opposition, and we know that calls to their offices last month greatly influenced the AHCA being pulled. Please continue to be heard on this issue that is a matter of life and death for some of our sisters and brothers and a matter of quality of life for even more.
