Are We Past The Holiday Pounds?

January 28, 2014 · by Joy Williams, Former PHW Regional Coordinator

I know that we are past the holidays, but are we past the pounds that we might have packed on? Many times, we are so bombarded by the holiday hype that we hardly have time to consider tips to avoid weight gain. So with 2013 behind us, here are some ideas to consider for 2014 and the holidays that are yet to come. These tips are useful as a daily habit and come from a conversation between chef and doctor John La Puma and Joe and Terri Graedon of “The People’s Pharmacy.”  I have saved this podcast since 2012, and have listened to it a few times.

You can listen to the podcast here.

What is unique about this podcast is that the expert is both a chef and doctor. If you don’t have time to listen to it, some highlights include using food as medicine and as pleasure. He concurs that the average holiday weight gain is five to 10 pounds, all during the short timeframe from Thanksgiving to the New Year. His paradoxical warning is:

  • Have a plan for the holiday season
  • It’s hard to plan ahead
  • Which is why you have to have a plan

I want to emphasize that he suggests drinking water to avoid holiday pounds. But not just any water, citrus water. He says to drink three liters of citrus water early in the day, drink often, and this citrus water can be combined with whatever else you are drinking. He shares that this helps your brain because the brain has a hard time telling the difference between when you are hungry and when you are thirsty. Nice point.

I hope you enjoy this podcast as much as I did. Leave us a note as to what you do to avoid holiday pounds.
