Natural Oral Health Tips That Can Even Help Your Heart

September 2, 2014 · by Joy Williams, Former PHW Regional Coordinator

By taking care of your teeth, you can gain a beautiful smile, fewer cavities, fresh breath, and possibly, according to increasing scientific evidence, better heart functioning…did I surprise you with that one? Yes, it is true. Although the medical community isn’t quite firm on the link, there is agreement that there is evidence tying the two together.

When we read in Jeremiah 30:17, “For I will restore health unto you, and I will heal you of your wounds, saith the Lord,” our assurance is that the Lord cares about our health. And churches are becoming more and more involved with addressing the health needs of the community.

You may want to think of multiple ways to help care for your oral health. If you’re wondering what more you can do at home, beyond flossing and brushing, then read below. Some of these same foods suggested are heart healthy, as well.

1) Eat crunchy vegetables such as celery, apples, broccoli, and carrots. These crunchy vegetables may actually help remove sticky particles from your teeth.

2) Eat strawberries to whiten your teeth. There is an astringent in strawberries that removes surface stains.

3) Gargle for 10 to 20 minutes  with a teaspoon of coconut oil or sesame oil.  It’s a big time commitment, but some who have tried this practice noticed an improvement in their oral health. Scientific evidence of its effectiveness is limited, however.

4) Drink more water.
