The Department of Health and Human Services reports that young adults ages 18 – 34 account for 41 percent of those who are uninsured and possibly eligible for coverage through the Marketplace or Medicaid. According to the report, young adults are the age group most likely to be without health insurance coverage. This makes them a key population for outreach.
Young Invincibles is a national organization committed to expanding opportunities for young adults in health care, higher education, and employment. The branch of the organization which mobilizes young adults for health care is called Healthy Young America.
Healthy Young America has done something very cool. They initiated a video contest for young adults, calling for submissions explaining why young adults are not invincible and why health insurance is so important for them. I must say, as someone who falls into that category myself, the results are impressive. Contestants could act, sing, or create animation. After one round of voting, there are nearly 100 videos left for the second round.
The DHHS report cited above recently determined that 46 percent of single, Marketplace-eligible uninsured young adults could get coverage for $50 or less per month. It is estimated that nearly 66 percent may be able to purchase coverage for less than $100 per month.
Many young adults stand to benefit from the changes to health insurance brought on by the Affordable Care Act. Let’s get the word out to the young adults we know (and if you are a young adult, share this with your friends). Consider visiting the Healthy Young America website to vote on your favorite video, song, or animation. Voting will end at midnight on November 11th. You can vote three times per day until then.
As the theme says, we are not invincible, we are human.
Get covered.
