Needed: Lobbyists for the Voiceless

December 7, 2012 · by Sandy Irving, Volunteer Program Associate

Congress is overwhelmed with lobbyists for corporations, Chambers of Commerce, AARP, the Department of Defense, etc. But those living in poverty are short on lobbyist as the so-called ‘fiscal cliff’ is debated and cuts as well as revenue sources are considered.

People of faith and compassion are being called to serve as lobbyists for the voiceless and the vulnerable.  The faith community must lift a voice. If our senators hear from 100 faithful constituents each day saying “work for the common good, protect the neediest, feed the hungry, and provide health care for all,” they will listen. If you do your part, it will make a difference.

Please contact your senators and congress people, either in person at their local offices, by phone or email in the coming week to share your concern about our priorities.

Monday, December 10, there is a candlelight vigil in front of Kay Hagan’s New Bern Avenue office in Raleigh at 4:30. Join the vigil to add a candle in the darkness for the voiceless.

If you have a story about how a government program has helped you or someone you know, let your congress person or senators know. Below is contact information for North Carolina’s senators. They have additional local offices; check the web to find the one nearest you:
